Jamaica became an independent nation on August 6, 1962 mostly through the collaboration
of the Jamaica Progressive League and the People’s National Party. Although Jamaica
had all the trappings of an independent nation there were still some roadblocks.
This was due mainly to the fact that people who had been deprived for so long of
their history and cultural background could not be instantly motivated. Cooperation,
patriotism and appreciation of self and of others would be slow in coming, but the
League’s opinion was that time and education would rectify the matter.
