The League was launched September 1, 1936. During this period under colonial rule numerous injustices were being inflicted on the people of Jamaica. A group of progressive Jamaicans living in the US decided that these indiscretions should no longer be tolerated, so in the face of fierce opposition and grave danger they organized themselves and forged forward to change the social and political landscape of Jamaica.
By joining forces with other progressives in Jamaica the League successfully advocated for and made changes in the following areas:
•Fair wages for labor (minimum wage)
•Fairness in the Civil Service appointment
• Education
•Health
•Reforestation & Parks
•Land Settlement
• Taxation
•Agriculture
•Industry
•Census
•Franchise
